Staking Your Claim

Is this what you wanted

When you pulled him away

Triumph never celebrated

Such sudden grace

I saw yours in the look he gave

As he walked away

When all I wanted to lift him up

You gotta bring me down

When all I wanted was to give him love

You gotta take everything and turn it around

I wanted to open my mouth

I wanted to shout

But I couldn’t get, no I couldn’t get

The words out

They nearly shudder in the shadows you left

Destruction never carved such a direct path

And such a mess

Such a mess

When all he wanted was to live out loud

You gotta make it a display

Of your ways, ideals, education, and know-how

When all he wanted was to explain

You gotta make it about your regrets, your needs,

Your neglection, and your pain

And though he offers me no rejection,

I’ve heard all of yours

I’ve heard all of yours

So quick to throw out a few suggestions

Now who are you to be sure

When all you wanted

Was to complain

Open your mouth

Let it out

Everything you needed, had to say

Isn’t it easy to sit back and judge

When you don’t know

What you’re talking about

Isn’t it easy to sit back and judge

Isn’t it easy to sit back and judge

To sit back and judge.

But your mind won’t change

Your mind won’t change

Your mind won’t change

Or are you just staking your claim?
