Gut Feelings: The Solar Plexus Chakra

The solar plexus chakra is located slightly above the navel (along the spinal column) and represents the seat of our self-confidence, willpower, happiness, and joy! Its associated color is warm yellow, like the sunshine. If you’ve ever been betrayed or personally attacked, you have probably felt the energetic “punch in the stomach” feeling. That's the energy center we are talking about here. (This goes to show you don’t have to be a healer or into “woo-woo” to feel subtle energy. Most people can recall exactly what it feels like to be energetically “punched in the stomach.”)

While there are similarities to the root chakra, which, if you recall, had to do primarily with security, the solar plexus takes it a step further, with more implications for our interactions with the world at large. Do you lack self-confidence? Do you have trouble asserting boundaries? Do you have trouble making decisions? These things would suggest a deficit of energy flowing through this chakra.

On the other hand, if you tend toward the excessive end, you’ll likely exhibit anger, aggression, and dominating or controlling behaviors. A person with a healthy, well-balanced solar plexus operates between these two extremes. This person is established in the seat of self, exercises willpower with respect and awareness, feels confident in their ability and position, makes empowered decisions, and feels “solid.”

A simple way to show the solar plexus chakra some love is to soak up some sunshine. If you can’t experience sunshine in the physical world (like me today!), take a few moments to visualize a warm yellow glow radiating from your solar plexus center along the spinal column. Take a few deep, cleansing breaths into this glow to activate the area. You can also eat yellow foods like banana or lemon, and my personal favorite, hang out with the tonal vibration of the “E” musical note.
