Flowing with Change: The Sacral Chakra

The Sacral Chakra

The sacral chakra is situated about two inches below the navel. The meaning of its Sanskrit name, Svadhishthana, is “the dwelling place of self.” The sacral chakra is the center of pleasure and joy, governing our emotions, creativity, sensuality, intimacy, and sensitivity.

As with the root chakra, the sacral chakra also has to do with feeling stable. Being able to flow with change or explore your creativity is related to how secure you feel. When your sacral chakra is balanced, you find pleasure in life. You can tap into your creativity and have a healthy relationship with your sexuality.

Addiction and repression are associated with an unbalanced sacral chakra. Symptoms of an over-active sacral chakra are mood swings/emotional lability and addictive or obsessive behaviors. Signs of an under-active sacral chakra are fear of pleasure, lack of creativity, insecurity, detachment, and low libido.

Working with the Sacral Chakra

Some things you can try to tap into the positive energy of the sacral chakra:

(1). Get creative: Dance, play, sing, write, paint, garden, cook- whatever calls to you. Just allow the creative energy to move through you.

(2). Work with the color orange: eat orange foods, wear orange, or breathe into the sacral chakra while visualizing its orange color.

(3). Connect with water: Go swimming; dip your feet into a lake, pond, or pool; you can even make a ritual out a simple shower or bath. You could light an orange candle or burn some orange essential oil, for example.

Whatever you do, the point is to relax and enjoy it. The lesson of the sacral chakra is the enjoyment of life’s pleasures without clinging or excess.
