A Firm Foundation: The Root Chakra

It is ironic that I’m starting this week’s installment in the “Journey of Freedom” series (about the Root Chakra) while at an airport terminal, waiting to board a series of flights that will ultimately take me well off the ground and over the ocean to London, England.

In any case, read on for a brief introduction to Root Chakra.

The Root Chakra

The Root Chakra is the foundation of the other chakras. The themes here are safety, security, and stability. We are talking basic necessities like food, water, clothing, and shelter. We are also talking about a psychological sense of security and safety. Trust, being grounded, feeling you have a right to be here, finishing projects, and experiencing yourself as connected to the human experience all apply here.

As in anything else, the answers lie within. Finding true security and being grounded is an inside job. Your relationships and life events will create experiences that will ultimately teach you to find this in yourself.

People who have an overactive Root Chakras tend to be overly preoccupied with materialistic things and surface appearances and have a deficit in empathy and awareness. In contrast, an underactive Root Charka can manifest as a low survival drive, depression, anxiety, distrust, fear, or feeling disconnected from your human body.

When your Root Chakra is balanced, you’ll be able to see tasks through to completion. You’ll feel supported, safe, and grounded in your daily life. You’ll be in touch with your role/s in your human life. You’ll feel grounded in your human body. You’ll be stable and able to accomplish things in this world.

Two Ways to Work with your Root Chakra

(1). When you are experiencing anxiety, fear, or feeling ungrounded, visualize your body connected to Earth by roots that plunge deep into the ground. Bring the grounding energy of the earth into your being. Be fed by it. Know that you are rooted and connected. When you are anxious, your energy is in your mind, so bring your energy down into your body by focusing on the sense of being rooted and nourished by Earth.

(2). If your work involves a lot of mental activity and sitting, make sure to take some breaks and MOVE your body. At the very least, get up and take a 5-minute walk or go outside for some fresh air. While doing this, consciously bring your energy down into your body. Don’t worry that you won’t be able to start where you left off. Write yourself a note and you will be able to pick up where you left off when you come back.

I hope this has given you some helpful starting information about what the Root Chakra is and ideas about how you can work with the energy in this area.
